Civitavecchia, Rome’s cruise port, is about 80 km (50 miles) from central Rome. The cheapest way in is the regional train: €4.60 and 45–85 minutes, after a free port shuttle and a short walk or bus to the station. A taxi costs a fixed €150 per car; a private transfer or shore excursion picks you up at the ship.

Step 1: from your ship to the port gate

Cruise ships berth inside the port, and you cannot walk out of the docks. A free shuttle bus run by Port Mobility takes you from the cruise terminals to the Largo della Pace service center at the port gate. It is timed to ship arrivals and runs every 20–25 minutes. Since December 2025 there is also a new cruise terminal, the Bramante terminal, so check which berth your ship uses.

From Largo della Pace you have two ways to reach Civitavecchia station:

  • On foot: about 15–20 minutes (1–1.6 km, 0.6–1 mile) along the seafront.
  • By bus: CSP runs a bus from the cruise terminals to the station on ship days, every 20–25 minutes, for €6 per person each way (about 15 minutes). Trenitalia sells it together with the train as “Civitavecchia Portlink”.

There is no luggage storage inside the port. Port Mobility lists two places just outside: Bar Navy (Via Tarquinia 33, €5 per bag) and Seamenstop (Viale Garibaldi 1, €3–7).

Regional trains on the FL5 line run from Civitavecchia to Rome about twice an hour on weekdays, and once or twice an hour on Sundays, with some longer gaps.

From Civitavecchia to Regional train Good for
Roma San Pietro 41–57 min St. Peter’s and the Vatican (10 minutes on foot)
Roma Trastevere 46–62 min Trastevere
Roma Ostiense 53–69 min Metro B to the Colosseum
Roma Termini 64–86 min Metro A and B, buses

Tickets:

  • Regional ticket: €4.60 one way, the same price to any of the four Rome stations. Buy it from the machines or ticket office at the station, or on the Trenitalia app. You cannot buy tickets on board.
  • Validate paper tickets in the stamping machines before you board. An unvalidated ticket costs a €50–100 fine. Tickets bought in the app are tied to the train you choose and need no stamping.
  • BIRG day ticket: €14, valid until midnight on regional trains and on Rome’s metro, buses and trams. With two train rides at €4.60, it only pays off if you also take 4 or more rides in Rome. It is sold at stations and ticket outlets, not online.
  • Faster trains: a few Intercity and Frecce trains reach Termini in 45–55 minutes for €8.50–16. They do not stop at Roma San Pietro.

Coming back: in the afternoon there are trains every 15–30 minutes. Aim to be back at Civitavecchia station at least 2 hours before all-aboard: you still need the walk or bus, the port shuttle and security.

Strikes: Italian rail strikes are announced in advance on the Ministry of Transport strike calendar. On strike days, regional trains are guaranteed only in the morning and evening rush hours (about 6:00–9:00 AM and 6:00–9:00 PM), which may leave you without a train back to the ship. Check before your cruise.

By shuttle bus

  • SIT Bus Shuttle runs from Largo della Pace at 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM to Via Crescenzio, near the Vatican (about 10:00 AM), and on to Termini. Return coaches leave Termini at 3:15 PM and 3:25 PM. Tickets cost €15 one way or €25 return (€2 more if you buy at the stop). The 2026 schedule runs from March 15 to November 15.
  • Cruise line coaches, often called “Rome on your own”, drop you near the center and bring you back at a fixed time. They cost more than the train or SIT, but because you travel with the ship’s own excursion, the timing is the cruise line’s responsibility.

By taxi

Rome-licensed taxis (white cars with the Roma Capitale logo) charge a fixed fare of €150 from Civitavecchia port to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, the ancient walls around central Rome. The fare is per car and includes the highway toll and luggage; from the fifth passenger it is €5 more per person. Between Civitavecchia and Fiumicino Airport the fixed fare is €130.

Taxis licensed elsewhere do not have to apply these fares, so agree on the price before you set off. The drive takes about an hour without traffic, and up to 1 hour 45 minutes at busy times.

By private transfer

A private transfer is a car or van with a driver, booked in advance at a fixed price. Our vehicles have a permit to enter the port, so your driver meets you right below your ship, holding a sign with your name, and takes you to your hotel or to any address in Rome. Licensed transfers are allowed into Rome’s limited traffic zone (ZTL), so you are dropped at the door.

Route Mercedes E-Class (1–3 passengers) Mercedes V-Class (1–7 passengers)
Civitavecchia port ↔ Rome €325 €385
Fiumicino or Ciampino Airport ↔ Civitavecchia port €325 €385

Prices are per vehicle and the same in both directions, for pickups between 7:00 AM and 9:59 PM; from 10:00 PM to 6:59 AM a 15% night surcharge applies. The V-Class takes up to 8 suitcases, so it is also the right choice for smaller groups with a lot of luggage, and the S-Class is available on request. For groups of 8 or more, you see the price when you book. You can also turn the ride into a 1-hour panoramic drive past the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus and the Trevi Fountain, or a 3-hour orientation tour, before we drop you at your hotel.

For 2–4 people with little luggage, a Rome taxi at €150 costs less. A private transfer makes sense if you want the pickup at the ship guaranteed in advance, travel with a family or lots of luggage, or need a larger vehicle. See our private transfers.

On a private shore excursion

If you have one port day and want to see as much of Rome as possible, a shore excursion takes care of everything: transport, timing and the route.

Our Civitavecchia shore excursion by private golf cart works like this:

  • Pickup below your ship between 7:00 AM and 9:30 AM, with a sign with your name. If your ship docks late, your driver waits.
  • About 1.5 hours each way by private car between the port and Rome.
  • 5 hours in Rome by private golf cart, with short stops on foot at the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and St. Peter’s Square. You see the monuments from the outside.
  • Or 3 hours by golf cart, then free time for lunch before your driver takes you back.
  • Back at the pier at least one hour before all-aboard. No guest of ours has ever missed their ship, and we are covered by tour operator insurance.
  • Price: 5 hours, €990 for 1–3 people or €260 per person for 4–21; 3 hours, €840 for 1–3 people or €220 per person for 4–21. Monument tickets are not included. Full refund up to 72 hours before, 50% up to 48 hours before.

A visit inside the Colosseum or the Vatican Museums takes about 3 hours on its own, so it does not fit into the same day as the golf cart tour. If you spend a few days in Rome before or after your cruise, see all our golf cart tours in Rome.

From Fiumicino Airport to Civitavecchia

Flying into Rome on embarkation day? Fiumicino Airport is about 65–70 km (40–43 miles) from the port.

  • Train: one ticket for €11 covers the whole trip. Take the FL1 train from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Roma Trastevere and change there for the FL5 to Civitavecchia. It takes 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours, with trains every 30 minutes, then the walk or bus to the port. The Leonardo Express does not help here: it goes to Termini.
  • Bus: SIT runs one coach a day from Terminal 3 at 11:30 AM to Largo della Pace (12:15 PM) for €20.
  • Taxi: €130 fixed fare with a Rome-licensed taxi, per car.
  • Private transfer: €325 per vehicle for 1–3 people (€385 for up to 7), with the driver waiting at arrivals (flight tracked, up to 1 hour of free waiting) and drop-off at your ship.

From your Rome hotel to the port, the train costs €4.60, or €10.60 with the Portlink bus to the cruise terminal. A taxi is €150, and a private transfer €325 per vehicle for 1–3 people.

How much time will you have in Rome?

Most ships arrive at Civitavecchia early in the morning and sail between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM. A realistic day on your own looks like this:

  • 8:00–8:30 AM: off the ship and through the port to the station.
  • About 9:45 AM: in Rome, at San Pietro or Termini.
  • 2:30–3:30 PM: train back, depending on your all-aboard time.

That leaves about 5 hours in Rome. Pick one or two areas, for example the Vatican and St. Peter’s, or the Colosseum and the historic center, instead of trying to see everything. If you want to cover the main sights in one day without watching the clock, a private shore excursion does the planning for you.

Tips for your port day

  • Bring your cruise card and an ID: you need them to get back into the port.
  • Check your ship’s all-aboard time, not the departure time: it is usually 30–60 minutes earlier.
  • Check the strike calendar a few days before your port day.
  • Carry some cash for the port bus, the station machines and small cafés.
  • Sundays: fewer trains, with some gaps of over an hour.
  • Luggage on disembarkation day: store it near the port (Bar Navy, Seamenstop) or at Roma Termini (KiPoint, track 24, 7:00 AM–9:00 PM).
