Civitavecchia, Rome’s cruise port, is about 80 km (50 miles) from central Rome. The cheapest way in is the regional train: €4.60 and 45–85 minutes, after a free port shuttle and a short walk or bus to the station. A taxi costs a fixed €150 per car; a private transfer or shore excursion picks you up at the ship.

| Option | Time to central Rome | Price (one way) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regional train | 45–85 min by train, plus 30–45 min from the ship to the station | €4.60 per person (+ €6 for the port bus) | Budget travelers who are happy to plan |
| SIT shuttle bus | about 1 hour from the port gate; fixed departures | €15 per person (€25 return) | Fixed times, seasonal (March–November) |
| Cruise line coach (“Rome on your own”) | about 1.5 hours | set by your cruise line | Peace of mind: you travel with the ship’s own excursion |
| Rome taxi, fixed fare | about 1–1.5 hours | €150 per car (up to 4) | 2–4 people who want door-to-door without booking |
| Private transfer | about 1–1.5 hours, from the ship | €325 per vehicle for 1–3 people, €385 for up to 7 | Families, luggage, larger groups |
| Private shore excursion | the whole day, from and back to the ship | from €840 for 1–3 people | First-timers with one day in Rome |
Cruise ships berth inside the port, and you cannot walk out of the docks. A free shuttle bus run by Port Mobility takes you from the cruise terminals to the Largo della Pace service center at the port gate. It is timed to ship arrivals and runs every 20–25 minutes. Since December 2025 there is also a new cruise terminal, the Bramante terminal, so check which berth your ship uses.
From Largo della Pace you have two ways to reach Civitavecchia station:
There is no luggage storage inside the port. Port Mobility lists two places just outside: Bar Navy (Via Tarquinia 33, €5 per bag) and Seamenstop (Viale Garibaldi 1, €3–7).

Regional trains on the FL5 line run from Civitavecchia to Rome about twice an hour on weekdays, and once or twice an hour on Sundays, with some longer gaps.
| From Civitavecchia to | Regional train | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Roma San Pietro | 41–57 min | St. Peter’s and the Vatican (10 minutes on foot) |
| Roma Trastevere | 46–62 min | Trastevere |
| Roma Ostiense | 53–69 min | Metro B to the Colosseum |
| Roma Termini | 64–86 min | Metro A and B, buses |
Tickets:
Coming back: in the afternoon there are trains every 15–30 minutes. Aim to be back at Civitavecchia station at least 2 hours before all-aboard: you still need the walk or bus, the port shuttle and security.
Strikes: Italian rail strikes are announced in advance on the Ministry of Transport strike calendar. On strike days, regional trains are guaranteed only in the morning and evening rush hours (about 6:00–9:00 AM and 6:00–9:00 PM), which may leave you without a train back to the ship. Check before your cruise.
Rome-licensed taxis (white cars with the Roma Capitale logo) charge a fixed fare of €150 from Civitavecchia port to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, the ancient walls around central Rome. The fare is per car and includes the highway toll and luggage; from the fifth passenger it is €5 more per person. Between Civitavecchia and Fiumicino Airport the fixed fare is €130.
Taxis licensed elsewhere do not have to apply these fares, so agree on the price before you set off. The drive takes about an hour without traffic, and up to 1 hour 45 minutes at busy times.
A private transfer is a car or van with a driver, booked in advance at a fixed price. Our vehicles have a permit to enter the port, so your driver meets you right below your ship, holding a sign with your name, and takes you to your hotel or to any address in Rome. Licensed transfers are allowed into Rome’s limited traffic zone (ZTL), so you are dropped at the door.
| Route | Mercedes E-Class (1–3 passengers) | Mercedes V-Class (1–7 passengers) |
|---|---|---|
| Civitavecchia port ↔ Rome | €325 | €385 |
| Fiumicino or Ciampino Airport ↔ Civitavecchia port | €325 | €385 |
Prices are per vehicle and the same in both directions, for pickups between 7:00 AM and 9:59 PM; from 10:00 PM to 6:59 AM a 15% night surcharge applies. The V-Class takes up to 8 suitcases, so it is also the right choice for smaller groups with a lot of luggage, and the S-Class is available on request. For groups of 8 or more, you see the price when you book. You can also turn the ride into a 1-hour panoramic drive past the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus and the Trevi Fountain, or a 3-hour orientation tour, before we drop you at your hotel.
For 2–4 people with little luggage, a Rome taxi at €150 costs less. A private transfer makes sense if you want the pickup at the ship guaranteed in advance, travel with a family or lots of luggage, or need a larger vehicle. See our private transfers.

If you have one port day and want to see as much of Rome as possible, a shore excursion takes care of everything: transport, timing and the route.
Our Civitavecchia shore excursion by private golf cart works like this:
A visit inside the Colosseum or the Vatican Museums takes about 3 hours on its own, so it does not fit into the same day as the golf cart tour. If you spend a few days in Rome before or after your cruise, see all our golf cart tours in Rome.
Flying into Rome on embarkation day? Fiumicino Airport is about 65–70 km (40–43 miles) from the port.
From your Rome hotel to the port, the train costs €4.60, or €10.60 with the Portlink bus to the cruise terminal. A taxi is €150, and a private transfer €325 per vehicle for 1–3 people.
Most ships arrive at Civitavecchia early in the morning and sail between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM. A realistic day on your own looks like this:
That leaves about 5 hours in Rome. Pick one or two areas, for example the Vatican and St. Peter’s, or the Colosseum and the historic center, instead of trying to see everything. If you want to cover the main sights in one day without watching the clock, a private shore excursion does the planning for you.
How far is Civitavecchia from Rome?
About 80 km (50 miles) to central Rome and 68 km (42 miles) to the Vatican. By car it takes about an hour without traffic and up to 1 hour 45 minutes at busy times; regional trains take 45–85 minutes depending on the Rome station.
What is the cheapest way from Civitavecchia to Rome?
The regional train: €4.60 one way to Roma San Pietro, Trastevere, Ostiense or Termini. Add the free port shuttle to the gate, then a 15–20 minute walk or the €6 bus to Civitavecchia station.
Is the taxi from Civitavecchia to Rome a fixed price?
Yes, with Rome-licensed taxis: €150 per car from the port to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, toll and luggage included. Between Civitavecchia and Fiumicino Airport the fixed fare is €130. With other taxis, agree on the price before you leave.
How do I get from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Civitavecchia cruise port?
By train, with one €11 ticket: FL1 to Roma Trastevere, then FL5 to Civitavecchia, in 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours. A Rome taxi costs €130 fixed, the SIT coach €20 (one departure a day), and a private transfer €325 per vehicle for 1–3 people, with drop-off at your ship.
Can you see Rome in one day from a cruise ship?
Yes, but you will have about 5 hours in the city, so choose one or two areas. Visits inside the Vatican Museums or the Colosseum take about 3 hours each, so plan them as the main event of the day, or see the monuments from the outside on a guided drive.
Can I do a golf cart tour of Rome from Civitavecchia, and how do I choose a company?
Yes, several Rome companies offer it. Compare where the driver meets you (at the ship or at the port gate), the total length of the day, how early you are back before all-aboard, whether the price is per group or per person, and recent reviews. Ours picks you up below the ship, lasts about 8 hours with 3 or 5 hours by golf cart, and brings you back at least one hour before all-aboard.
