Frida Kahlo Photo Exhibition in Rome: A Rare Look Through Nickolas Muray’s Eyes

If you’re a Frida Kahlo fan (and honestly, who isn’t?), there’s an event in Rome you won’t want to miss. The Frida Kahlo photo exhibition is now showing at the Historical Museum of the Infantry, and it’s something truly special. Why? Because it gives us a close, personal look at Frida—not just as an artist, but as a woman, a friend, and a lover.

Oh, and bonus? These photos are being exhibited in Rome for the very first time.

A Love Story in Photos

The photos were taken by Nickolas Muray, a talented portrait photographer, close friend, and one-time lover of Frida’s. He wasn’t just a great photographer—he was also a pioneer of color photography, which makes these images even more special.

Between 1937 and 1946, Muray captured around 60 beautiful images, both in color and black and white. They show Frida in her element: at home in Coyoacán, with Diego Rivera, surrounded by friends, and even with Muray himself. These aren’t your average portraits—they’re moments of real life, filled with personality, emotion, and soul.

These photos aren’t just beautiful—they’re incredibly intimate. Muray had a front-row seat to Frida’s world, and it shows. You’ll see her iconic style, her bold presence, her vulnerability, and her deep bond with Mexican culture. It’s like stepping into her private universe.

More Than Just Photos

The exhibition goes beyond photography to offer a truly immersive experience. Here’s what else you’ll find:

  • Original letters between Frida and Nick that reveal their on-again, off-again romance and a strong friendship that lasted until Frida’s death in 1954

  • Rare video clips showing them together at different moments

  • Eight traditional outfits, handmade by indigenous Mexican artisans, inspired by Frida’s unique fashion style

  • Jewelry and accessories, handcrafted and reflective of her bold personality

  • A stamp collection from around the world, showcasing her wide-reaching influence

The exhibition is curated by Vittoria Mainoldi, who brings a thoughtful, emotional approach to presenting Frida’s story—not just through her art, but through the lens of someone who truly knew her.
