Hours, Free Entry & How to Get Tickets

You can still admire Rome’s most photographed fountain for free from Piazza di Trevi—stop by anytime, take photos, and enjoy the atmosphere like always. The city only changed one thing: close-up access. If you want to step into the inner perimeter (the basin area right by the water and the classic coin-toss spot), you now need a €2 ticket.

The city requires the €2 ticket during the main visiting hours for the close-up area, usually 9:00–22:00. Sometimes city staff adjust the schedule for maintenance or crowd management, so check the official update before you go.

Many visitors enter for free. Rome lets residents of Rome and the Città Metropolitana di Roma Capitale enter for free with ID. The city also gives free entry to children under 5 and to people with disabilities plus one caregiver.

If you need a ticket, you can choose the easiest option for you. Buy it online through the official channel, or purchase it in person at Tourist Infopoints, Civic Museums, and affiliated sales points. You can also buy it directly at the entrance—just remember the entrance accepts card payments only.

Why Rome Introduced the fee?!

Rome introduced the €2 fee for a simple reason: to reduce overcrowding and help fund the fountain’s protection and maintenance. In 2025, reports say Trevi welcomed 10+ million visitors, which put real pressure on the area.

A quick reminder of its legacy: builders constructed the Trevi Fountain between 1732 and 1762. Nicola Salvi designed it, and Giuseppe Pannini completed it—so even a small preservation step can make a difference.
