Marcello Mastroianni at Rome Film Festival 2025: Honoring an Icon of Italian Cinema

This year, the 19th edition of the Rome Film Festival 2025, scheduled from October 16 to 27, is dedicated to Marcello Mastroianni, one of the most critical and award-winning Italian actors. He was a three-time Oscar nominee and winner of two Golden Globes. Major international festivals honored him for his performances. He is also the face of this edition’s official image.

Celebrating Marcello Mastroianni’s Career

The Rome Film Festival has planned a wide range of initiatives and events to celebrate Marcello Mastroianni’s career. One highlight is an extensive retrospective of films, including some restored versions. These films showcase Mastroianni’s collaborations with directors like Federico Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, Ettore Scola, and Pietro Germi. The festival will present documentaries about his life and works, along with exhibitions at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone and the Casa del Cinema. A special tribute will also feature an encounter with actress Chiara Mastroianni, the daughter of Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve.

The festival will feature tributes and in-depth analyses of works by key figures in both Italian and international cinema. It will also host public talks, including “Paso Doble,” a dialogue between two authors. Another talk, “Absolute Beginners,” will have a renowned author recount their cinematic debut.

Film Screenings and Competitions

In addition to the international competition, the program features non-competitive sections. These include “Grand Public,” which showcases films for a broad audience. Another section, “Best of 2024,” highlights standout titles from other international festivals. Designed by Renzo Piano, the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone remains the heart of the event. It also boasts one of the most extensive red carpets in the world.

Locations and Venues Across Rome

This year, the Rome Film Festival once again involves the entire city: from MAXXI to the Teatro Olimpico, from the Casa del Cinema to Via Veneto, the Teatro Palladium, and the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, extending even to Leonardo da Vinci Airport, where two screening nights will be held at Terminal 5.
