For most first-time visitors with a day or two, yes: a golf cart covers in 3 hours what would take most of a day on foot, with the sights seen from the outside. Shared tours start at €35 per person and private ones at €350 for up to 3 people. If you are fit and on a budget, walk.

We are a local tour operator in Rome, in business since 2012, and golf cart tours are a big part of what we do. Here is an honest comparison with real numbers: how much ground a golf cart covers, what it costs compared with walking, a vintage Fiat 500 or a hop-on hop-off bus, and when another option is better.
What is a golf cart tour of Rome?
An electric golf cart with a driver takes you around the historic center, with short stops on foot at the main sights. The carts are small and open, so they can use quieter streets away from heavy traffic, and you step out for photos at each stop.
Two things to know before you book:
- The driver is not a licensed tour guide. Drivers know the city well, tell its stories and adapt the route to your requests, but they do not guide you inside monuments.
- You see the sights from the outside. Entrance tickets are not included, with one exception on our private tour: the €2 ticket to the basin of the Trevi Fountain.
| Our tour | Duration | Who rides with you | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private | 2, 3 or 5 hours | Only your group, up to 21 guests | from €350 for 1–3 people |
| Semi-private | 3 hours | Up to 6 guests in the cart | €120 per person |
| Shared | 2 or 3 hours | Other travelers, up to 7 per cart | €59 per person (2 hours), €99 (3 hours) |
| Shared, with audio guide | 90 minutes | Other travelers | €35 per person |
On the 2-hour private tour, the maximum group size depends on the start time. Groups larger than 21 are possible on request, with plenty of notice.
How much of Rome can you see in 2, 3 or 5 hours?
Rome’s main sights are close together, but not that close. Our 3-hour private route links the Villa Borghese gardens and the Spanish Steps with the Colosseum, the Aventine and Capitoline hills, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. On foot, that is roughly 10 km (about 6 miles), with hills to climb: about two and a half hours of pure walking before you stop anywhere.
| Time | By golf cart | The same on foot |
|---|---|---|
| 2 hours | The Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Orange Garden, Mouth of Truth, Capitoline Hill, Piazza Venezia, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain | About 6 km: a half day with stops |
| 3 hours | All of the above, plus Villa Borghese, Piazza del Popolo, Trajan’s Markets and the Spanish Steps | About 10 km: most of a day |
| 5 hours | All of the above, plus Trastevere, the Janiculum Hill and the Vatican area, with a view of St Peter’s Basilica | About 16 km: more than most people want to walk in a day |
The compact core is easy on foot: Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain are 5 to 15 minutes apart. What tires people is the distance between areas. From the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain is about 25 minutes away on foot and St Peter’s Square about an hour. Add summer heat, the hills and the sampietrini, the cobblestones that cover much of the center, and walking all day gets tiring fast.

Golf cart, walking tour, Fiat 500 or hop-on hop-off bus: which is best?
| Option | Price | What you get | How much you walk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking on your own | Free | Your own pace, and you can go inside wherever you like | A lot: most of the day | Fit travelers on a budget |
| Guided walking tour | Varies by company | A guide who tells the history as you walk, in a smaller area | Moderate | History lovers |
| Hop-on hop-off bus | Varies by company, with tickets for one or more days | Open-top double-decker on a fixed loop, audio guide, stops near the big sights | Some: you walk from the stops to sights such as the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain | An overview at your own pace |
| Golf cart (ours) | from €35 per person shared, from €350 for 1–3 people private | A driver, short stops at many sights, seen from the outside | Little: a few steps at each stop | First-timers, families, limited mobility, short stays |
| Vintage Fiat 500 (ours) | €290 (1 hour) or €590 (3 hours) for 1–3 people | A private open-top vintage car with a driver, Trevi Fountain ticket included | Little | Couples, photos, a special occasion |
A few honest notes on this table:
- The bus gives the big picture for less, and you can stay at each stop as long as you like. Rome’s official tourism website lists one of the main operators with a full loop of about 1.5 hours and a bus every 25 minutes.
- A walking tour suits you if the stories matter more than the number of sights.
- The golf cart wins when time or energy is short: more sights, fewer steps, and someone else plans the route.
The same choice, criterion by criterion (for city buses, trams and the metro, see our guide to getting around Rome):
| Criterion | Walking on your own | Hop-on hop-off bus | Golf cart (ours) | Vintage Fiat 500 (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Time for the main sights | Most of a day: about 10 km for the sights of our 3-hour route | A full loop of about 1.5 hours, plus the walks from the stops | 90 minutes to 5 hours | 1 or 3 hours |
| Comfort | Cobblestones, hills and, in summer, the heat | Seated on an open-top double-decker | Seated in an open cart, with rain covers | Seated in an open-top vintage car; in the rain, a golf cart |
| Wheelchair users | Hard on cobblestones and hills | Ask the bus company | Private tours only: move onto a seat, and the folded wheelchair travels on board | Choose a private golf cart tour |
| Route | Your own | A fixed loop | Private: built around you; shared: a fixed route | Private, planned around your interests |
| Narrow streets and pedestrian areas | You can go everywhere | Main roads: you walk from the stops to sights such as the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain | Small carts use quieter streets, with a few steps at each stop | A small car, with a few steps at each stop |
| Groups | Any size | Each traveler buys a ticket | Private: up to 21 guests guaranteed, larger groups on request; shared: up to 7 per cart | 3-hour tour: up to 21 guests guaranteed, in one or more cars; 1-hour tour: up to 3 |
| Indicative price | Free | Varies by company | from €35 per person shared, from €350 for 1–3 people private (2 hours, November to mid-April) | €290 (1 hour) or €590 (3 hours) for 1–3 people |
Is a golf cart tour worth the cost compared with walking?
Walking is free, so the real question is what your time and energy are worth. Here is what 3 hours cost for different groups, at today’s prices:
| Your group | Shared golf cart | Private golf cart | Fiat 500 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 people | €198 (€99 each) | €450 (€225 each) | €590 (€295 each) |
| 3 people | €297 (€99 each) | €450 (€150 each) | €590 (about €197 each) |
| 4 people | €396 (€99 each) | €600 (€150 each) | €1,180 (€295 each) |
| 6 people | €594 (€99 each) | €900 (€150 each) | €1,440 (€240 each) |
For a family of three, the private tour costs about €50 more per person than the shared one, and it adds hotel pickup, your own route, the Trevi Fountain ticket and a stop for gelato or coffee. A couple on a budget can choose the shared 2-hour tour at €59 each, or the 90-minute audio guide tour at €35 each. Several companies in Rome run golf cart tours, so compare what is included before you compare prices.
Who is a golf cart tour worth it for?
- First-time visitors with one or two days: you see the classic sights in one morning and keep the afternoon for a museum.
- Families with children: there is no minimum age, on semi-private and shared tours too, but child seats are available on private tours only. The 90-minute audio guide tour takes children from 4. Each child takes a seat and counts as a traveler.
- Seniors and anyone with limited mobility: you walk only a few steps at each stop. On our private tours, wheelchair users move onto a seat of the golf cart, and the folded wheelchair travels on board in place of the two back seats.
- Cruise passengers: our golf cart shore excursion from Civitavecchia costs from €840 for 1–3 people, with the transfer from the ship. See Rome in one day from your cruise ship and our Civitavecchia to Rome guide.
When is a golf cart tour not worth it?
Golf carts are our job, but they are not right for everyone:
- If you want to go inside the Colosseum or the Vatican Museums with a licensed guide, book a guided visit (see our Colosseum guide and Vatican guide), or a combined tour: golf cart + guided Colosseum visit or golf cart + Vatican Museums.
- If your budget is tight, walk. The center is compact, and every sight on our routes can be seen from the outside for free.
- If you travel alone on a budget, skip the private tour: its price is the same for 1, 2 or 3 people. A shared tour costs €35 to €99.
- If you love wandering, the alleys of Trastevere and Monti are best on foot, at your own pace.
Whoever you book with, ask: Is the tour private or shared? Is hotel pickup included? Which sights do we stop at? Is the driver also a guide? Are any tickets included? What happens if it rains?
Golf cart or vintage Fiat 500?
Our Dolce Vita tour follows similar sights in a restored vintage cabrio converted to electric: a Fiat 500 or, depending on group size, a Fiat 850 Spiaggina. A driver is always at the wheel. The 3-hour tour costs €590 for 1–3 people, €1,180 for 4 and €240 per person from 5, and includes the Trevi Fountain ticket and a short food stop. There is also a private 1-hour Fiat 500 ride at €290 for up to 3 people, with the Trevi Fountain ticket.

- Choose the Fiat 500 for style, photos and special occasions such as an anniversary or a proposal.
- Choose the golf cart to spend less, for children under 3, for a wheelchair on a private tour, or to join a shared tour. The Fiat 500s have no child seats, and children must be at least 3.
- In the rain, Fiat 500 tours switch to golf carts with rain covers. If no golf cart is available, we offer you another date or time.

What should you know about rain, children, wheelchairs and group size?
- Rain: golf cart tours run all year, also in the rain, because the carts have rain covers.
- Children: tell us their ages when you book. On the 90-minute audio guide tour, children must be at least 4, everyone needs their own seat, and strollers are not allowed.
- Wheelchairs: on private tours, wheelchair users move onto a seat of the golf cart, and the folded wheelchair travels on board in place of the two back seats. The chair must be foldable and compact. The 90-minute audio guide tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.
- Group size: we guarantee up to 21 guests on private golf cart and Fiat 500 tours (on the 2-hour golf cart tour, it depends on the start time). The semi-private tour takes up to 5 people per booking, and the 90-minute tour up to 7. On shared tours each cart seats up to 7, so we cannot always keep a large group in the same cart.

Is a golf cart tour in Rome worth the money?
For most first-time visitors, yes: in 2 to 3 hours you see the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain from the outside, with very little walking. If you are fit, on a tight budget, or want to go inside monuments with a licensed guide, walking or a guided visit is the better choice.
How much does a golf cart tour in Rome cost?
With us, shared tours cost €35 per person for 90 minutes with an audio guide, or €59 to €99 per person for 2 or 3 hours. The semi-private tour costs €120 per person, and private tours start at €350 for 1–3 people for 2 hours.
Do golf cart tours in Rome include hotel pickup?
Our private and semi-private tours pick you up at your hotel or Airbnb in the historic center. Shared tours and the 90-minute audio guide tour start from our office at Via del Colosseo 11A, near the Colosseum.
Do you go inside the Colosseum on a golf cart tour?
Not on a standard golf cart tour. Golf cart tours show the Colosseum and the other sights from the outside, and drivers are not licensed guides. To go inside, book a guided visit, or a combined tour that adds a guided Colosseum visit to the golf cart ride.
Can children and wheelchair users join a golf cart tour?
Yes. Children of any age are welcome on private, semi-private and shared tours, but child seats are available on private tours only. On private tours, wheelchair users move onto a seat and the folded wheelchair travels on board; the 90-minute audio guide tour is not suitable for wheelchairs and takes children from 4.
Do golf cart tours in Rome run in the rain?
Yes. Our golf carts have rain covers and run all year, so rain alone does not cancel your tour. Our Fiat 500 tours switch to golf carts when it rains, or we offer another date if no cart is available.
